Revenue, usage up after phone credit conversion--Mobius

May 15, 2005

THERE has been an evident increase in game usage and revenues, online game publisher Mobius.ph said, after launching its service allowing Globe Telecom mobile phone subscribers to turn their phone credits into either game time or in-game currency.

"The response was good," said Greg Kittelson, product director at Digital Media Exchange, parent firm of Mobius.ph, in a telephone interview. He however declined to give details on how much additional revenue was generated from the new payment method.

Mobius.ph distributes the massively multiplayer online role-playing games (MMORPGs) MU Online and Gunbound.

The phone credit conversion service is currently available only to Globe subscribers, who can convert their pre- and paid phone credits to either game time in MU Online or in-game currency in Gunbound.

"Definitely, it has provided additional effective payment gateway for our users nationwide. We’re currently looking at adding Smart [Smart Communications] subscribers," Kittelson said.

"This dramatically extends our reach beyond the retail outlets that sell our game cards. And this is, in fact, by far, the most convenient way for subscribers to access our games," DME chief executive Scott Countryman added in a separate interview.

Mobius also offers a credit card payment facility for players of its online games but, "We're still looking at additional, effective, innovative payment gateway schemes," Kittelson added.

There are about 12.9 million Globe subscribers and over half a million e-loading and prepaid phone card outlets throughout the Philippines .

Smart has close to 20 million subscribers.

Meanwhile, Kittelson disclosed that Gunbound is set to release hip-hop, basketball star avatars next week.—Erwin Lemuel Oliva
